East Riding of Yorkshire Walk Leaders' Meeting 7th October 2019

Volunteer Walk Leaders in the East Riding of Yorkshire got together in Beverley Leisure Centre for their annual meeting and lunch on Monday, 7th October.

The highlight for Market Weighton was the top Award for the Highest Number of Walkers enjoying our Walking for Health walks around the town over the past year. The number was well over 2000.  This was particularly rewarding after the town's walk leaders had overseen the organising of East Riding's Friday Pub Walks in 2019, along with Market Weighton Walkers are Welcome's longer monthly walks and the normal weekly Walking for Health 2m and 4 mile Wednesday walks along the Wolds Way.

Walk leaders at the meeting also heard about safeguarding in the community and also heard from Walking for Health's very keen and supportive sponsors - the "Ramblers" - who outlined plans for the future, whilst praising the scheme, its supporters and the efforts of volunteers to encourage walking in their communities.

The need for new walk leaders was emphasised by Walking for Health organiser Laura Hutchinson and Sports Play & Arts Service organiser Sarah Johnson, offering extra help in First Aid and Map Reading.  The East Riding of Yorkshire Council awards reflect the appreciation the Council has for its volunteers' hard work in raising awareness of and seeing the direct benefits of regular walking with others.  As Laura said, it is not just an activity that is health giving but socially it can stave off loneliness and offers the opportunity to make new friends each week.

A good morning's time - well spent - plus an Award!  What more could you want.
